The main point in the housing of birds is a right nourishment for them. The principal part of the cage birds such as parrots, pigeons etc. are considered to be granivorous birds. But this fact doesn't intend them to eat only seeds. In the natural conditions birds vary their nutrition against the time of the year. They may eat anything containing animal feed, greens, fruits and tree barks. So, feed your bird with large variety of meal and it will be robust.

Nowadays you may buy bulk bird seed almost everywhere, even online. But you should not feed your bird just with seeds during a whole year because it doesn't really conform to different bird nutrition in nature conditions.

There are a lot of cases when birds eat the same feed for years and nothing happens, but diseases not always reveal themselves in a quick way. As a result a bird may be sick with various kinds of diseases such as overweight, kidney illness, disorder of the reproductive function and a lot of others. Also there may be many occasions of infectious diseases because birds need vitamins and proteins in their nourishment.

The basis in a bird's meal should contain grain blend. It is highly important for birds that the mixture must include different sorts of grains (wheat, oats, millet, maize etc) and seeds (canary seed, herbage seeds and lettuce's seeds). Also you can add there different oil-yielding seeds such as sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, hemp seeds and different nuts. But you are to take care of because the excessive feeding with oil-yielding crops may provoke overweight.

Every bird has its own standard daily amount of food so you are to follow that doses should not increase the norm. For example canary's norm is one teaspoon, budgerigar would eat 2 teaspoon a day etc.

Fresh forage consists of various greens, wild herbage, fruits, vegetables, also fresh leaves and branches of trees. And, of course you have to add animal forage to the bird's ration. You can give your bird boiled eggs, fatless curds and small amount of minced meat. The periods of feeding with such meal are different. For a normal bird it should be given one time a week, for a bird that has moult period - twice a week and in the period of nestling - every second day. Chalk or small stones should be also included in an extra feeder in a bird's cage. They contain calcium and important for good digestion of a bird.
